From the Teachers
In Year 2, homework is designed to consolidate in class learning. It is important that students engage with learning at home including a range of Literacy tasks. Children are also encouraged to investigate topics of interest with the support of their families. A reminder that work completed through the Home Extended Learning Portal will not be assessed by teachers and therefore does not need to be sent into school.
At Garran Primary school we believe that literacy learning should feature in all learning areas of the curriculum and be interwoven through everything we do. Literacy is the means by which we communicate, whether by comprehending the thoughts, ideas and intentions of others, or in communicating our own thoughts, ideas and intentions. With this in mind we must build receptive skills (listening, reading and viewing) and expressive skills (speaking, writing, visually representing), as outlined in the Australian Curriculum.
At Garran Primary School we believe that learning Mathematics creates opportunities for, and enriches the lives of, our students. We believe that having a sound understanding of Mathematics is essential for our students to make sense of the world around them, enabling them to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently. We nurture our students to see themselves as capable mathematical thinkers, who can apply mathematical reasoning skills and understanding in their everyday lives.
A strong sense of wellbeing provides children with self-confidence and optimism which can maximise learning potential. It includes feelings of life satisfaction, happiness, and social adaptability as well as good physical health. A strong sense of wellbeing encourages children to explore their environment, interact positively with others and can create a sense of agency in students.
Receptive modes (listening, reading and viewing)
By the end of Year 2, students understand how similar texts share characteristics by identifying text structures and language features used to describe characters and events, or to communicate factual information.
They read texts that contain varied sentence structures, some unfamiliar vocabulary, a significant number of high-frequency sight words and images that provide extra information. They monitor meaning and self-correct using knowledge of phonics, syntax, punctuation, semantics and context. They use knowledge of a wide variety of letter-sound relationships to read words of one or more syllables with fluency. They identify literal and implied meaning, main ideas and supporting detail. Students make connections between texts by comparing content. They listen for particular purposes. They listen for and manipulate sound combinations and rhythmic sound patterns.
Productive modes (speaking, writing and creating)
When discussing their ideas and experiences, students use everyday language features and topic-specific vocabulary. They explain their preferences for aspects of texts using other texts as comparisons. They create texts that show how images support the meaning of the text. Students create texts, drawing on their own experiences, their imagination and information they have learnt. They use a variety of strategies to engage in group and class discussions and make presentations. They accurately spell words with regular spelling patterns and spell words with less common long vowel patterns. They use punctuation accurately, and write words and sentences legibly using unjoined upper- and lower-case letters.

Each book includes supplemental curriculum developed by a credentialed elementary educator, aiming to strengthen comprehension and verbal and written skills for English-language learners.
Wushka was developed with the aim of providing a digital reading program that supports best practice in the everyday teaching of reading, reflecting the reality of literacy teaching with printed books, reading groups and take-home readers. Students have a username and password assigned to them by the classroom teacher.

TypingClub is a free web-based software designed to teach typing to students of all ages.
Sora is the new user-friendly app that lets you access it through your laptop, phone or tablet. The Sora app was designed around the modern student reading experience. It empowers students to discover and enjoy eBooks and audiobooks from their school, for both leisure and class-assigned reading.
Starfall’s emphasis on phonemic awareness, systematic sequential phonics, and common sight words in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity has proven effective in teaching emergent readers. Starfall activities are research-based and align with Individual and Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics.
By the end of Year 2, students recognise increasing and decreasing number sequences involving 2s, 3s and 5s. They represent multiplication and division by grouping into sets. They associate collections of Australian coins with their value. Students identify the missing element in a number sequence. Students recognise the features of three-dimensional objects. They interpret simple maps of familiar locations. They explain the effects of one-step transformations. Students make sense of collected information. Students count to and from 1000. They perform simple addition and subtraction calculations using a range of strategies. They divide collections and shapes into halves, quarters and eighths. Students order shapes and objects using informal units. They tell time to the quarterhour and use a calendar to identify the date and the months included in seasons. They draw two-dimensional shapes. They describe outcomes for everyday events. Students collect, organise and represent data to make simple inferences.
Mathletics can provide valuable maths learning for students throughout their entire school journey, from the start of primary school to the end of secondary. As students mature, so does the program, providing updated visuals, challenges, and activities that will keep them captivated with maths. Toy Theater is a collection of interactive educational games for your elementary classroom. They are all free and are designed to work on desktop computers, tablets and mobile devices.
Children will enjoy practicing maths at home while they explore a fantasy world packed with action and adventure. Prodigy Math Game’s adaptive algorithm matches children’s learning style and grade level.
Math Playground was created in 2002 for students who needed a fun way to practice math facts. Since then, Math Playground has grown to include a wide variety of math topics, from problem solving and mathematical art to real world math and thinking games. there is no sign up for math playground.
Topmarks is a leading independent educational website for children, teaching professionals and parents. Topmarks gives children the opportunity to learn online, through safe, fun and engaging games and activities.

His website has plenty of free maths resources and games for students of all ages and abilities. There is also a FREE teaching at home hub full of exciting maths games and resources.

At Garran Primary School we strongly believe that the best learning takes place when student's have a chance to not only focus on curriculum but also on their own personal wellbeing. This may include getting a good nights sleep, eating healthy food, exercising, having time to decompress and debrief at the end of the day and spending quality time with family, carer's and friends. Looking after ones wellbeing will look different for everyone.
